We are pleased to announce that our 2006 documentary “Mauna Kea – Temple Under Siege” has been named to the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress. The film was among 25 added to the registry this year as “America’s most influential films.”

Puhipau, co-founder of Na Maka o ka ‘Aina, was recently honored (posthumously) at La Ho’iho’i Ea 2019 in Honolulu as a Kupuna Aloha ‘Aina, along with Keli’i “Skippy” Ioane. In a video (“Puhipau – Blown Away”) produced by Joan Lander for the event, Puhipau is quoted: “We are sovereign. And we gave nobody, nobody permission to rule over us. So the process now is to educate, build the consciousness strong enough that we will overwhelm them. How is yet to be seen, but it will happen.”

The late Abraham Puhipau Ahmad was recently named as one of “Na Mamo o Ka Po’e Hawai’i – Living Treasures of the Hawaiian People”. The recognition for his documentary work was given posthumously by the Office of Hawaiian Affairs and the Pa’i Foundation in June. He was honored along with Patience Namaka Bacon, Sam Ka’ai, Marie McDonald, Josephine Fergerstrom, Nainoa Thompson, and Elizabeth Lee (posthumously). It is with great sorrow that we share with you the news of the passing of Puhipau, co-founder of and co-producer with Nā Maka o ka ‘Aina. Since 1982, he and partner Joan Lander have worked to bring Hawai‘iʻs story to the world through documentary films. The work continues to preserve, digitize and make available the thousands of videotapes recorded over the past three decades.
